Quick Guide to Fountain Pen Structures: Converter vs PistonFilling System

Before comparing filling systems, let's first understand the core parts of a fountain pen through simple disassembly. Most fountain pens, whether a slim thin metal pen or practical Travel Friendly Fountain Pen, share the same main external components. The key difference lies inside the pen barrel - the ink-filling mechanism.

Fountain Pen Disassembly & Core Parts Introduction

1

Take apart a standard fountain pen, and you will find these six key components:

Cap: Protects nib from damage and prevents ink from drying out. Built-in clip allows clipping onto pockets, an important feature for any Travel Friendly Fountain Pen.

Barrel: Outer main shell of the pen. Inside, thin metal pen models hold a converter or ink cartridge; piston-fill pens house the full piston assembly.

Section / Grip: The hand-holding zone during writing. It firmly locks the feed and nib in place. Many styles add anti-slip treatment for comfortable long-time writing.

Feed: Positioned under the nib. It controls ink flow and delivers ink steadily from the reservoir to nib tip.

Nib: Metal writing tip that touches paper. Different nib specifications EF / F / M / Fude decide your writing line width.

Internal filling unit (the main difference):

Converter pen: Removable converter or disposable ink cartridge.

Piston pen: Integrated piston rod and sealing ring inside barrel, no detachable converter.

Important note: Do not take apart piston internal sealing parts by yourself. Improper disassembly will cause ink leakage.

Once you know these basic parts, it is easy to tell apart the two mainstream filling structures: converter system and piston-filling system.

Converter System(Removable Ink Absorber)

A converter is a detachable ink absorber. It fits into the pen barrel where disposable ink cartridges go.

Working principle: Install the converter inside pen body; dip nib into bottled ink, twist the converter knob to draw ink inside. You can also replace it with disposable ink cartridges anytime.

Ink capacity: Around 0.5-0.8ml. ✅ Advantages

Highly flexible: Switch between bottled ink and cartridges freely. Perfect for Travel Friendly Fountain Pen, you can carry sealed cartridges for trips without bringing ink bottles.

Easy cleaning: Take out the whole converter for flushing; simple to change ink colors.

Widely used on slim-body models, including many thin metal pen series. ❌ Drawback: Limited ink volume, you need to refill more frequently for heavy writing.

Best for: office daily note-taking, business trips, casual journaling, beginners.

Piston-Filling System(Built-in Piston Structure)

The piston mechanism is fully built-inside the pen barrel, no extra removable converter part. The pen barrel itself serves as ink reservoir.

Working principle: Keep the pen barrel intact, dip nib into ink bottle. Twist the tail knob counter-clockwise to push out air, then twist clockwise to suck ink directly into pen barrel.

Ink capacity: 1.2-2ml, much larger than converter type. ✅ Advantages

Huge ink storage, fewer refills, ideal for long-time handwriting, calligraphy practice and heavy-volume writing.

Integrated sturdy construction, common on high-end classic fountain pens. ❌ Drawback

Cannot use disposable ink cartridges; bottled ink is required for refilling.

Harder to clean internal components. Not the first pick for Travel Friendly Fountain Pen.

Usually thicker barrel, less common for ultra-slim thin metal pen.

Best for: heavy daily writers, calligraphy lovers, pen enthusiasts.

Quick Comparison Table

Which one should you choose?

If you travel often, switch ink colors frequently, or prefer slim-bodied thin metal pen: go for converter filling system.
