If you just got your Metal Fountain Pens or an all metal fountain pen for note-taking, office signing or as a Journal Writing Fountain Pen, you may be confused by three common filling systems: ink cartridge, ink converter and piston-fill mechanism.
As a professional fountain pen factory, we make many all-metal fountain pens supporting all three filling options. Below is the step-by-step guide to help you fill ink correctly, avoid air bubbles, ink leakage and skipping writing

How to use Disposable Ink Cartridge
The ink cartridge is the simplest solution, great for travel and quick replacement.
- Unscrew the pen barrel and take out the old empty refill.
- Take a new ink cartridge, push the sealed sharp end firmly into the pen section until the seal is pierced. You will feel a slight click.
- Screw back the pen barrel.
- Keep the pen nib pointing downward for 30-60 seconds, to let ink flow down to nib.
- Test writing on scrap paper.

Tips: Cartridges are disposable. When ink runs out, replace with a new one. It works perfectly with our compact Journal Writing Fountain Pen for daily diary.
How to use Ink Converter (Reusable Sucker)
Converter lets you use bottled ink, cost-effective for heavy users. Most of our Metal Fountain Pens support standard converter installation
- Unscrew pen barrel, remove empty cartridge if fitted.
- Insert the converter tightly into pen section, same position as ink cartridge.
- Turn converter knob to push piston all the way down, fully expel inner air.
- Dip nib completely into bottled ink, make sure nib and feed are submerged under ink surface.
- Slowly twist the knob reverse direction to draw ink inside the converter.
- Pull pen out from ink bottle. Wipe nib and grip with soft paper towel to clean excess ink.
- Test write on waste paper.

Note: Do not knock nib against ink bottle bottom, to protect nib deformation.
How to use Piston-Fill Fountain Pen
Piston-fill fountain pen builds ink storage inside pen barrel, large ink capacity, no extra cartridge or converter needed. Many premium all metal fountain pen adopt piston filling system.
- Unscrew pen cap. Do NOT take off pen barrel.
- Twist the rear piston knob counter-clockwise to push internal piston to the front end, push out all air.
- Fully submerge nib and feed into ink bottle.
- Twist piston knob clockwise slowly to retract piston, ink will fill into the metal barrel.
- To reduce air bubbles: keep nib in ink, push little ink out then suck ink again.
- Take pen out, carefully wipe nib and pen grip area.
- Ready for journal writing or office signature.
